Unemployment in Russian republic hits women, young people
Kazan, 27 May: Boris Zakharov, the labour and employment minister, told the press on 27 May that there were currently 27,100 unemployed in the Republic of Tatarstan. Of these, 70 per cent are women and almost 30 per cent are young people. The wages of 25 per cent of those employed are below the minimum subsistence level. This year, redundancies at several large enterprises, such as KamAZ, Tatenergo and Tatneft, are expected to reach nearly 14 per cent. According to preliminary estimates, unemployment will reach 32,500 by the start of 2004. [Passage omitted: factors said to be affecting employment]
