21 April 2003 18:42 Number of Russian unemployed goes up Moscow, 21 April: The number of officially registered unemployed in Russia stood at 1,628,000, including 229,000 in
the Chechen Republic, by late March 2003.
The Russian State Committee on Statistics released these data on Monday [21 April]. This is 10.1 per cent higher than
in March 2002.
The overall number of unemployed, including hidden unemployment, is estimated at 5,975,000, which is 2.7 per cent up
on the previous March. The State Committee on Statistics revealed that by the end of March [2003] the number of people
actively involved in the economy was 71,500,000, or about 50 per cent of Russia's total population.
According to statistics, the majority of working Russians are concentrated in large and medium organizations. In
February 2003 they employed 39,800,000 people, or 60.8 per cent of the overall number of people in employment.
In addition, 1,740,000 people worked in such organizations part-time and on contracts of a legal nature.
