21 March 2003 15:17 Russian unemployment at 8.5 per cent in February Moscow, 21 March: The total number of unemployed people in Russia stood at 6.11 million people in February, down 0.5
per cent on the month or up 2.4 per cent on the year as of 1 March, according to data provided by the State Statistics
Committee and obtained by Prime-TASS on Friday [21 March]. The figures were calculated according to the methodology used
by the International Labour Organization. The number of officially registered jobless people stood at 1.621 million in
the same period, up 3.8 per cent on the month and 12.2 per cent on the year. The total number of unemployed people
accounted for 8.5 per cent of Russia's total labour force. Russia's labour force was estimated at 71.5 million
as of the end of February, which is about half the country's total population, the committee said.
