20 February 2003 00:00 RUSSIAN AUDIT CHAMBER CHAIRMAN SERGEI STEPASHIN MEETS WITH CHRIS DONNELLY, SPECIAL ADVISER FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN AFFAIRS TO THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF NATO
2003-02-19
The international antiterrorist coalition, constituting a response to the emergent new threats to humanity, is a valuable possession of the civilized world community, Sergei Stepashin, Chairman of the Audit Chamber of the Russian Federation, said today during his meeting with Chris Donnelly, Special Adviser for Central and Eastern European Affairs to the Secretary General of NATO.
The interlocutors discussed questions pertaining to cooperation between the supreme audit institutions of the NATO nations and Russia in the matter of closing off illegal channels of financial support for international terrorism. The Audit Chamber head noted in particular that blocking financial support for international terrorism was an important aspect of cooperation by the Audit Chamber of Russia with the supreme audit institutions of the NATO nations. In its turn, the NATO bloc too, he emphasized, should arrive at more serious, pragmatic and substantive forms of cooperation in the struggle against the financing of international terrorism, of which the growing Russian economic cooperation with the NATO nations might become a victim.
In this connection the idea was discussed of convening a conference in the near future with the participation of the supreme audit institutions of Russia, the NATO nations and the European Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI). The interlocutors were unanimous in the view that that forum could consider specific forms and methods of protection against terrorism rendering more difficult the conditions of conducting civilized business, and form a mechanism for putting an end to its financial support. Agreement was reached to continue contacts on this question.
