Putin and Berlusconi discussed practical aspects of further deepening Russian-Italian cooperation in the humanitarian and trade-and-economic fields.

During the conversation, which took place directly before the beginning of the EU summit on Iraq, Putin reaffirmed the position of Russia in favor of making maximum use of the mechanisms and possibilities provided by UNSC resolution 1441 with a view to a politico-diplomatic settlement of the problem. As the results of the Security Council meeting on February 14, 2003, have confirmed, these possibilities are far from exhausted.
