ON PREPARATIONS FOR AUGUST 2003 LARGE-SCALE TRAINING EXERCISES IN THE PACIFIC BASIN

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Minister of Defense Sergei Ivanov and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Vladimir Kuroyedov. The head of the Russian defense agency reported to the President on the preparations for the conduct of large-scale training exercises in the Pacific Basin in August 2003.
The exercises, the Navy C-in-C said, will constitute a further verification of the requirements of the naval doctrine, which exists in Russia today. He also noted that in the course of the exercises a whole set of activities will take place relating to cooperation with other fleets, as well as to the bioresources of the Russian Far East.
