29 January 2003 00:00 CONCERNING THE RUSSIAN INFORMATION PRESENCE IN THE UNITED STATES
2003-01-28
A meeting took place on January 28 at the Russian Ministry of the Press, Television and Radio Broadcasting between Mikhail Seslavinsky, State Secretary and First Deputy Minister, and Jeffrey Hirschberg, Member, US Broadcasting Board of Governors, and Jeff Trimble, Radio Liberty/Free Europe Policy and Strategy Planning Director.
In the course of the meeting the American side raised, in particular, a question relating to expanding the broadcasting of the Liberty radio station on the territory of Russia.
Commenting on this theme, Seslavinsky noted that at the present time it is difficult to count on a favorable solution of this question, considering that Russian radio stations, more specifically The Voice of Russia, because of the restrictions existing in US legislation, still have no free access to the American radio market. Any steps in this direction, he said, ought to bear a reciprocal character.
Russia has long ago taken that step by granting Radio Liberty the possibility to broadcast on its territory. Now a lot depends on the American side, on its preparedness to facilitate an adequate Russian information presence on the territory of the United States.
The sides also discussed questions of prolongation of the broadcasting license of the Liberty radio station in 2003.
