RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN SPEAKS TO PRESIDENT KIM DAE-JUNG OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA BY TELEPHONE

A telephone conversation took place today between President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President Kim Dae-Jung of the Republic of Korea.

Putin informed the ROK President of the efforts being udertaken by Russia towards a political settlement of the so-called North Korean nuclear problem. Kim Dae-Jung expressed gratitude to the head of the Russian side for Russia's positive role in this process.

For his part Putin, stressing the basic importance of continuing the inter-Korean process, noted the significance of the new round of ministerial-level talks between the DPRK and ROK held a few days ago.

In the course of the conversation the President of the Russian Federation gave a high assessment to the personal contribution made by Kim Dae-Jung to developing Russian-Korean relations and the dialogue between North and South. There was expressed confidence that the new Korean leadership will continue this constructive course.
