23 January 2003 00:00 CONCERNING BORDER DEMARCATION WITH CHINA
2003-01-22-02
Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that the question of border demarcation with China will be solved in the near future. Russia will be seeking acceptable solutions which meet its interests, the head of state told a meeting of the State Council. At the same time he admitted that the solution of this problem "will require some compromises."
At the basis of the strategy of Russian-Chinese relations lies the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, signed last year on the initiative of the PRC President, Jiang Zemin.
Russia has its own problems, so does China. And Russia will analyze what is happening in the PRC. In Putin's opinion, it is important to take joint decisions on the basis of consensus and mutual consideration of the interests of the two countries.
In the course of the discussion Putin invited the heads of concerned regions and the appropriate agencies to return to discussing the rules and requirements of disposal of nuclear waste and the ensuring of nuclear safety.
Also at the State Council meeting, the President declared the necessity of a more considerate attitude to the rights of foreigners. Neither can one disagree with those who speak of the growth of tensions because of the unsettledness of a number of aspects of migration policy, Putin noted. For all this directly affects the population of Russia and the functioning of the regions.
