Question: As has become known, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Saltanov is setting off for Baghdad. What are the aims of his trip?
Answer: Russia is engaged in continual dialogue with Baghdad in the interest of finding a peaceful solution to the Iraq issue. It is within the framework of this work that Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Saltanov is flying to Iraq.
The aim of his mission is to hold consultations with the Iraqi side on the situation around Iraq, to compare our approaches and to discuss possible steps directed to a politico-diplomatic resolution of the Iraq problem. Of course, bilateral relations will also be touched on in Baghdad, questions pertaining to Russian-Iraqi economic cooperation, including in the oil and gas industry.
The Deputy Minister is planning to discuss the situation in the region with the Jordanian leadership as well. Saltanov also bears in mind to hold consultations in Lebanon - the country which is currently the chairman of the Arab League.
