16 January 2003 00:00 ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A QUESTION FROM ROSBIZNESCONSULTING NEWS AGENCY ABOUT THE PROPOSALS OF EX-US PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER FOR A SETTLEMENT OF THE KOREAN PROBLEM
Question: What could you say with regard to the proposals for a settlement of the Korean problem, with which Jimmy Carter has come out?
Answer: Moscow with interest has acquainted itself with the concrete proposals for a resolution of the current tense situation around the Korean Peninsula, with which former US President and Nobel Peace Prizewinner Jimmy Carter has come up in The Washington Post.
The well reasoned ideas of the eminent American politician, who made a noticeable contribution to defusing the crisis in this area of the work in 1993-1994, are very timely and can help in the course of an unfolding international dialogue on Korean problems. Of special interest is Carter's proposal to return to the principles of the Agreed Framework of 1994 between the DPRK and the United States in the interest of abiding by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and other accords directed to ensuring the Korean Peninsula's denuclearized status.
I would like to note that many of the ideas of the former US president are essentially consonant with our well-known "package proposal" for an early settlement on the Korean Peninsula.
