14 January 2003 18:51 Russia: Unemployment rises in Tatarstan in 2002 Kazan, 14 January: The number of registered unemployed people in Tatarstan grew by 5,000 in 2002. At the start of
2002 there were 18,100 people registered unemployed, or 0.97 per cent of the able-bodied population. At the start of
2003, the figure stood at 23,100, or 1.26 per cent.
Commenting on the rise, Klara Tazetdinova, a department head at the Tatarstan Ministry for Labour and Employment,
said that the reason was to be found in job cuts in the oil industry where the volume of drilling was falling and
non-viable enterprises were being closed down.
