09 January 2003 00:00 ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A QUESTION FROM ROSBIZNESCONSULTING NEWS AGENCY CONCERNING THE US ADMINISTRATION'S STATEMENTS ON ITS WISH TO STEP UP COOPERATION WITH RUSSIA IN THE FIELD OF MISSILE DEFENSE
30-09-01-2003
Question: Please comment on the statements by representatives of the US administration on its wish to step up cooperation with Russia in the field of missile defense.
Answer: With interest we have familiarized ourselves with the recent statements made by authorized representatives of the US administration, including in the Russian media, on the American side's wish to step up cooperation with Russia in the field of missile defense.
As is known, the Russian side in the last few months has submitted to the United States a number of specific proposals as to how this can be done based on the major strategic arms agreements that have been reached between the presidents of the two countries. Therefore we expect that the assurances just made by the high-ranking US officials of a "serious eagerness" to cooperate with Russia in missile defense will help speed up a favorable American response to the draft proposed by the Russian side of a new political agreement in the ABM field which would promote, not undercut strategic stability.
