06 January 2003 00:00 STATEMENT BY BORIS MALAKHOV, DEPUTY OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS REGARDING THE LATEST TERRORIST ACTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST
14-06-91-2003
The situation has again become sharply exacerbated in the Middle East. Yesterday two terrorist acts occurred in the center of Tel Aviv. Two Palestinian suicide bombers blew themselves up in a busy, crowded part of the city, which led to numerous casualties. According to data that has come in, at least 23 people were killed, including women and children, and more than 100 others injured. Several Palestinian extremist groups at once claimed responsibility for what was perpetrated.
Russia, which has repeatedly had personal experience of the entire gravity of such barbaric crimes, extends the most deeply-felt condolences to the kith and kin of those killed, and sincere sympathy to the sufferers. Strongly condemning the inhuman attacks of terrorists, we call upon the Palestinian leadership, which has come out against such actions, to use all the means at its disposal to combat any manifestations of terrorism.
The organizers of the terrorist acts obviously count on thwarting the dialogue of the various Palestinian organizations in Cairo, within the framework of which the possibilities for a cease-fire are being discussed. These actions are also directed to scuttling the international meeting for the support of Palestinian reforms, which is planned to be held in London in the middle of January.
According to information received, at night Israel launched a military operation with the employment of helicopters in Gaza and in the area of Rafah, a Palestinian camp. While recognizing the full right of Israel to ensure its security and carry out corresponding measures, we hope that the Israeli leadership will avoid any occurrence of casualties among the peaceful Palestinian population.
