30 December 2002 00:00 ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A RUSSIAN MEDIA QUESTION ABOUT RUSSIA'S HANDING OVER TO GEORGIA OF THE PERSONS ACCUSED OF AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AGAINST EDUARD SHEVARDNADZE IN 1998
2697-30-12-2002
Question: How will you comment on the handing over by Russia to Georgia of two persons accused of an assassination attempt against Eduard Shevardnadze in 1998?
Answer: On December 28, the two Georgian citizens detained in Chechnya, suspected of the attempt on the life of the President of Georgia, were delivered to Tbilisi and handed over to the Georgian side. The extradition procedure was carried out within a week, without any delay, as is required by the tasks of fighting terrorists.
In this connection we again lay stress on the fact that the Chechen gunmen, who in accordance with the rules of international law are to be extradited to Russia, have since August 2002 continued to be kept in Georgia under various pretexts.
The Russian side insists on an immediate extradition of the gunmen, accused of committing terrorist acts on Russian territory.
