28 December 2002 00:00 STATEMENT BY ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS REGARDING TERRORIST ACTS IN MIDDLE EAST
2689-28-12-2002
The Islamic Jihad organization has carried out a terrorist act near Hebron, killing four Israelis and wounding at least eight more. Practically simultaneously in the center of Jerusalem near the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission an explosive-stuffed car was blown up and only by a lucky chance did no one suffer.
Russia is convinced that it is necessary to end the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation as soon as possible, because the continuing violence may entail the gravest consequences for both parties and, above all - for the lives of innocent people, Israelis and Palestinians alike. The very prospect of changing the situation for the better, the signs of which have begun to appear recently, also turns out to be in jeopardy.
In this connection we call upon the Palestinian National Authority leadership and the Government of Israel to do everything within their powers to prevent a new escalation of bloodshed, violence and terror. The most important thing now is to show restraint and composure, to achieve a relaxation of tensions and to start practical movement along the road of normalizing the situation and getting it back on a peaceful track.
