25 December 2002 00:00 ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A RUSSIAN MEDIA QUESTION ABOUT WAYS TO NORMALIZE THE SITUATION ON THE KOREAN PENINSULA
2670-25-12-2002
Question: How could you comment on the situation around North Korea's nuclear program? What ways do you see for normalizing the situation on the Korean Peninsula?
Answer: The situation around North Korea's nuclear program is cause for much concern to Russia because of its negative impact on the situation on the Korean Peninsula in direct proximity to our borders. In the light of the latest developments there we attach special importance to restoring cooperation by Pyongyang with the IAEA.
By and large, however, it is obvious that at issue is not a technical, but the political dimension of this problem. Therefore we expect from all the concerned parties the fulfillment of the obligations assumed, including the 1994 Agreed Framework between the DPRK and the United States, as well as the establishment of a peaceful and constructive dialogue with a view to resolving the issues of concern to many countries located in this part of the world.
