18 December 2002 00:00 BORIS MALAKHOV, DEPUTY OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A MEDIA QUESTION REGARDING THE SIGNING ON DECEMBER 16, 2002, BY THE EUROPEAN UNION AND NATO OF A JOINT DECLARATION ON EUROPEAN SECURITY AND DEFENSE POLICY
Question: Please comment on the signing by the EU and NATO of a Joint Declaration on European Security and Defense Policy.
Answer: We are carefully studying the Joint Declaration on European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP), adopted by the European Union and NATO and which has summed up months, one could even say years of efforts by the sides to foster coordination between the two organizations. In many respects, it became possible thanks to the decisions of the recent European Union summit in Copenhagen.
Russia has consistently been saying that it is interested in cooperation with the European Union within the framework of ESDP. Now that mutual understanding has been reached between the EU and NATO in this matter, we hope for new impetus to be given to Russia-EU ESDP cooperation.
