23 December 2002 00:00 ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A QUESTION FROM RUSSIAN MEDIA CONCERNING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN SOUTH KOREA
Question: How could you comment on the election on December 19 of Roh Moo-hyun as the new President of the Republic of Korea?
Answer: We welcome the democratic choice of the people of South Korea and congratulate Mr. Roh Moo-hyun, candidate from the pro-government New Millennium Democratic Party, on his victory.
I would like to note that in a conversation with Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov in Seoul this July Roh Moo-hyun declared his resolve in the event of his election to exert all his energies for the further development of friendly relations between our countries, as well as to continue the line on inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation. Such an approach fully meets the interests of Russia as well.
