08 October 2002 00:00 JOINT STATEMENT BY PRESIDENTS VLADIMIR PUTIN OF RUSSIA AND EDUARD SHEVARDNADZE OF GEORGIA UPON CONCLUSION OF A BILATERAL MEETING, OCTOBER 6, 2002, CHISINAU, MOLDOVA
President Putin: We have just concluded an exchange of views and information and consultations on the state of Russian-Georgian relations. And I must say that they passed in a productive mode. As they say in such cases, in the spirit of full openness, I wanted to stress that. There was an open, keen talk. Keen in the sense that both Russia and Georgia intend and want to solve the main problem in our relations, namely to establish effective coordination in the fight against terrorism. In this case we do not exclude - and that's how I understood the Georgian President - we do not exclude an intensification of the contacts between our special services and the contacts of specialists in the joint work. This is the first point. Secondly: on the Georgian President's proposal, directions will be given to our border services to improve their cooperation, up to and including joint patrolling of the state border. Simultaneously the ministries of foreign affairs will take up problems of the border itself. And, lastly, Eduard Amvrosiyevich assured me that the terrorists detained on the territory of Georgia who remain at the disposal of law enforcement bodies will soon be extradited to the Russian Federation.
President Putin (adding to what President Shevardnadze said): I would like to add that I also very highly assess the agreements reached. And I express hope that all that which we agreed upon will be implemented, and that this will benefit the peoples of Russia and Georgia.
