Alexei Gordeyev, Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister, today left on a working visit to the United Kingdom, where he will deliver a report at the international conference Investment Opportunities of the Central Region of Russia.

In the course of the conference, opening on March 27 in London, Gordeyev plans to report on the economic state and investment attractiveness of Russia. The purpose of the visit, he says, is to "explain what has been done over the last few years in our country for the legislative confirmation of market reforms and improvement of the investment climate." He noted that the policy shaped in the last three years has helped to enhance investment guarantees and made more transparent the economy as a whole.

Gordeyev has also announced as a feature of the conference, the presentation to be made of the Central Federal District of Russia, one of its leading areas for industrial and farming production. The plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Central Federal District, G. Poltavchenko, and heads of the regions which are part of the district will attend the conference.

During the trip, Alexei Gordeyev is also to meet with John Prescott, British Deputy Prime Minister, and Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and to discuss prospects for the two countries' further agricultural cooperation. Besides, a discussion is scheduled of farming-related questions of Russia's entry into WTO. "We want to explain Russia's position and adduce all the necessary arguments in support of our proposals, and hope to be understood," the Russian Deputy Prime Minister stressed.
