02 July 2002 00:00 MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT ON AGENDA OF PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY OF COUNCIL OF EUROPE (PACE)
Russian Federation Council International Affairs Committee Chairman M. V. Margelov drew attention to the extreme concern of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) over the exacerbation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He delivered a report from the PACE Commission for Political Affairs at an urgent debate on the Middle East problem.
The Assembly condemned as terrorism both the actions of armed Palestinian radicals, qualifying them as one of the chief obstacles to restarting the peace process, and the military operations and the unlawful occupation by Israel of Palestinian territories, as well as the construction of a protective wall. The parliamentarians believe that the leaders of the Palestinian autonomy should do everything possible to end terrorist acts and prohibit the practice of financial compensation to suicide terrorists' families.
PACE stated that the Middle East problem cannot be solved by military means and called on both the parties to immediately cease all the manifestations of violence and enmity and resume the peace process.
The session participants backed the proposal for holding an international conference on the Middle East problem under the aegis of the Quartet - the US, Russia, the European Union and the UN.
