RUSSIAN FEDERAL ASSEMBLY STATE DUMA CHAIRMAN GENNADY SELEZNYOV MEETS WITH IRAQI ELECTRICITY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SAHBAN FAISAL MAHJOUB (BASED ON DUMSKOYE OBOZRENIYE NEWSLETTER, NO. 133 (1287), NOVEMBER 16, 2002, MATERIALS)

Gennady Seleznyov, the Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly, has met with Sahban Faisal Mahjoub, the head of the Iraqi Electricity Commission.

The House Speaker emphasized that Iraq was now going through a not simple period. Although the United Nations Security Council had adopted a tough resolution on Iraq, the Iraqi president had done the right thing by accepting this document, thus preventing US aggression. The State Duma had been consistently acting in the role of a peacemaker, and upon completion of the UN mission would be seeking a lifting of the sanctions on Iraq. "I am convinced that Russian-Iraqi relations will be saturated with new programs. We want peace and prosperity for the Iraqi people. I am convinced that the sufferings of Iraq will be over," he declared.

Mahjoub thanked Seleznyov for the support of Iraq. He stressed that the decision of the leadership of the country to accept the UN Security Council resolution had averted a great number of casualties.

Speaking of Russian-Iraqi cooperation, Mahjoub said 400 projects are currently being implemented in Iraq in the field of power generation with the aid of Russian companies and specialists. One hundred and thirty-five contracts have been signed with Russian companies. "Iraq," he said, "remains a true friend of Russia."
