26 November 2002 00:00 RUSSIAN STATE DUMA CHAIRMAN GENNADY SELEZNYOV TO VISIT JAPAN (BASED ON MATERIALS OF DUMSKOYE OBOZRENIYE NEWSLETTER, NO. 137(1291), NOVEMBER 22, 2002)
Gennady Seleznyov, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly, will pay an official visit to Japan on December 1-5. Both sides attach great importance to this visit considering that it will take place ahead of the upcoming (January, Moscow) meeting of the leaders of the two countries.
It is expected that in Tokyo Seleznyov and the group of Russian legislators accompanying him will have an audience with Emperor Akihito and will meet with Tamisuke Watanuki, the speaker of the lower house of the Japanese parliament, and Hiroyuki Kurata, the speaker of the upper house. Also scheduled are meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and the head of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yoriko Kawaguchi.
The Russian deputies, among whom, in particular, Mikhail Zadornov, coordinator of the deputies' group for liaison with Japan's parliament, will exchange views with their colleagues from the Japan-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Society and the League for Friendship with Russia of the parliamentarians from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The delegation will also visit the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto.
The visit of the State Duma Chairman will occur at the invitation of Tamisuke Watanuki. It will take place in the conditions when Japanese legislators are showing growing interest in contacts with Russia. About fifteen groups of Japanese legislators have visited Moscow and Russia's Far East since the end of the summer.
