ON RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER MIKHAIL KASYANOV'S MEETING WITH SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov held a meeting in Johannesburg with South African President Thabo Mbeki, in the course of which the two discussed the outcome of the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Kasyanov and Mbeki considered also the situation on the African continent and discussed the state of, and prospects for Russian-South African relations. In particular, they noted that at the present time it is necessary to step up scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries. A meeting of the intergovernmental commission, co-chaired on the Russian side by Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko, is expected to be held in South Africa this November.

In addition, the head of the Russian Government handed over to the South African leader a message from Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia.
