ON DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER VIKTOR KHRISTENKO'S TALKS WITH IRANIAN OIL MINISTER BIJAN ZANGANE

2002-10-24-002

Russia and Iran expect to arrive soon at a settlement of all the issues concerning the preparation of a long-term program of mutual cooperation for a ten-year period, Viktor Khristenko, Russian Deputy Prime Minister, announced upon conclusion of his meeting with the Iranian Oil Minister, Bijan Zangane.

Khristenko noted that Iran had submitted a number of proposals regarding the preparation of the program which need discussing. According to him, a meeting of the cochairmen of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission is due on Friday, at which it is planned to discuss the issues. The program encompasses all the fields of economic cooperation between the two countries and, in particular, envisages expansion of partnerships in the fuel and energy sector, with an eye toward, among other things, the promotion of cooperation in oil and gas, as well as in nuclear energy.

At the meeting, the sides also discussed the situation connected with coordination between Russia and OPEC, as well as with evaluations of medium-term prospects of the international oil market.
