22 February 2001 00:00 ON THE COURSE OF THE CONSULTATIONS WITH A DELEGATION OF EXPERTS OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL
2001-02-20-08
Terrorism has become one of the most acute problems today, a factor seriously destabilizing the situation not only in individual countries and regions, but also in the world as a whole, Oleg Chernov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, said at the Russian-Indian consultations being held in the RF Security Council apparatus. It cannot be said that the international community is not taking measures to counter this deadly plague of the 21st century, but the scale of terrorist activity has not been reduced yet, he noted.
According to Chernov, there are over 500 formations of various ilk in the world today, using terrorism to achieve their aims. Most states are deeply concerned by the threat of terrorism. It is highly relevant to Russia and India in connection with the situation in Chechnya and Kashmir. The Taliban-controlled territory of Afghanistan has become a base of international terrorism. Regular attempts are being made at terrorist expansion into Central Asia. One also notes attempts by radical Islamic groups to increase their influence in Pakistan. All this urgently dictates the need for close cooperation between Russia and India in opposing terrorism. In fact, understanding on this issue exists between our countries, both at the highest level and at the level of the appropriate agencies and services, Chernov noted.
