17 July 2001 00:00 RUSSIAN FEDERATION SECURITY COUNCIL SECRETARY VLADIMIR RUSHAILO SPEAKS TO THE U.S. PRESIDENT'S NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER, CONDOLEEZZA RICE, BY TELEPHONE
On July 16 Vladimir Rushailo, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, had a telephone conversation with the U.S. President's National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice.
A number of current issues of Russian-American cooperation in the area of security were discussed. The interlocutors exchanged views on the agenda of the upcoming international summit meeting in Genoa. Also the question of Condoleeza Rice's upcoming visit to Moscow was touched on. Vladimir Rushailo expressed hope that thorough talks will be held during this visit on a full spectrum of relations between Russia and the U.S., as well as on the problems of international, including regional, security.
A subject of discussion during the upcoming visit of Rice to Russia, Rushailo noted, will be an extensive range of questions of mutual interest. In particular, the discussion will focus on strategic stability, including the problems of missile defense, strategic offensive arms reductions and the implementation of other disarmament treaties and agreements. An exchange of views will be held on the problems of European security, including questions of the expansion of NATO and the European Union. Prospects for the pooling of efforts by the world community in the fight against international terrorism and the illicit drug trafficking will be discussed.
Vladimir Rushailo noted the constructive role of an intensive business dialogue between the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the U.S. President's national security adviser in the matter of consistently developing the Russian-American partnership.
