06 February 2002 00:00 ON THE RESULTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES ON TERRORISM IN MUNICH AND ROME
2002-02-04-01
At the international conferences on terrorism that took place in Munich on February 1-3 and in Rome on February 4, Russia, NATO and the Western countries have found that they have far much more common points of contact than disuniting considerations, Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Oleg Chernov said.
In his words, "a mutually useful process is under way of agreeing on cooperation in the area of security, and especially in the field of combating international terrorism, in accordance with the decisions adopted at the highest state level."
Chernov noted the Russia-NATO dialogue is becoming increasingly useful and substantial, and that joint measures are already evident at the level of cooperation. "The 'gray zone' of distrust is becoming ever narrower," the Security Council deputy secretary emphasized.
Oleg Chernov regards with optimism the further Russia-NATO cooperation in questions of finishing the antiterrorist operation in Afghanistan, establishing a new government and normalizing the situation in the country.
