SECRETARY OF THE RUSSIAN SECURITY COUNCIL VLADIMIR RUSHAILO MEETS WITH EPHRAIM HALEVI, CHAIRMAN OF ISRAEL'S NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL

On September 30 Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Vladimir Rushailo held a working meeting with Ephraim Halevi, Chairman of the National Security Council of Israel.

The sides discussed a broad range of international security issues and problems in bilateral Russian-Israeli relations, with the main emphasis laid on questions of combating international terrorism, including in its Middle Eastern dimension. Rushailo and Halevi stressed interest in bolstering the international antiterrorist coalition as an effective instrument of fighting all the manifestations of extremism and terrorism.

While acknowledging that the force component is an inevitable element of the struggle against terrorists, the sides concurred that the strategy for eradicating terrorism as a phenomenon must bear a broader, comprehensive character.

Serious attention was devoted in the course of the meeting to Palestinian-Israeli relations, the flare of confrontation in which has alarmed the international community. Rushailo stressed that Russia is firmly disposed to help in every way the strengthening of the political component in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and restoring peaceful dialogue.

The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation expressed the confidence that the settlement will be sustainable if it is based on the Madrid principles, the well-known UN resolutions, and the existing agreements and will lead eventually to the coexistence of two sovereign independent states - Palestine and Israel.

During the talk, security problems in the Middle East and Central Asia were touched upon.

Rushailo and Halevi discussed also questions of bilateral relations between Russia and Israel, including in the law enforcement field.

The sides underscored the importance of further strengthening the juridical base of Russian-Israeli relations, especially in the humanitarian sphere, which is determined by the objective necessity to ensure the interests of the Israelis who have come from Russia and are maintaining close ties with our country.

Vladimir Rushailo and Ephraim Halevi expressed readiness to continue to maintain reciprocally useful contacts between the apparatuses of the security councils of Russia and Israel.
