2002-12-09-03
The expansion of NATO should contribute not to a fanning of tensions, but to the building-up of trust, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin declared at a meeting in the Kremlin with NATO Secretary General George Robertson.
Russia would like to elevate its representation in Brussels, Putin noted. For Russia "the practical side is extremely important, with which we will have to deal after the accession of new members to the Alliance."
Pending the fixing of a procedure for the use of armed forces in resolving world crises, political dialogue remains the first consideration, the head of the Russian state emphasized.
Putin is satisfied with the development of cooperation of Russia with NATO. Relations within the framework of the Russia-NATO Council are actively developing. There goes the joint work in groups, the filling of cooperation with practical content, the President noted. The positions of Russia and NATO in the assessment of new global threats are very close.
