Kyrgyzstan recalls Soviet-era debt
Kyrgyzstan plans to demand the payment of $31.467 million owed to it by six countries of the former USSR. The issue was raised by the republic’s economy and finance ministry following an inspection carried out by Kyrgyzstan’s audit chamber.

Ukraine owes $27.2 million to Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan’s debt is $2.3 million, Latvia owes $944,000, Estonia - $573,000, Moldova - $366,000, and Lithuania’s debt stands at $84,000, Kyrgyz officials say.

Tajikistan recognized its debt, unlike Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. As for Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan hopes to solve the problem through negotiations, as Kiev needs Kyrgyzstan’s support to join the World Trade Organization.

Meanwhile, the political situation in Kyrgyzstan is deteriorating. The republic’s parliament gathered on Sunday to discuss internal political problems and the resignation of prime minister Felix Kulov.

Kulov said he would resign if the parliament and president produced strong arguments.
