$10m reward offered for Chechen rebel leaders
The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation announced a reward of RUR 300m (about $10m) for information about the whereabouts of Chechen rebel leaders Shamil Basayev and Aslan Maskhadov.

A group of bandits led by Shamil Basayev and Aslan Maskhadov staged “inhuman acts of terrorism on the territory of the Russian Federation, which involved a tremendous loss of life", the Federal Security Service stressed. Anonymity and security are guaranteed to informers.

The information can be provided by calling (095) 914-43-69, 8-8712-222-762, 8-928-290-0610, 8-8712-222-510, or by contacting any regional departments of the Federal Security Service.

When our correspondent called one of these numbers, the person who answered the call, said that he was unaware of the reward, and it was the telephone of the Federal Security Service’s information service. The Chechen Department of the Federal Security Service confirmed information about the reward.

Earlier, a number of media reports said that Shamil Basayev and Aslan Maskhadov were behind the recent terrorist attacks in Russia. But Maskhadov’s envoy Akhmad Zakayev said that his boss was not involved in the attack. After the siege was lifted, Aslan Maskhadov even expressed condolences to the families of those killed, and said that Chechens did not fight against women and children.
