02 September 2004 11:37 Terrorist attack UN General Secretary Kofi Annan condemned the terrorist attack that took place on Tuesday evening near the Rizhskaya metro station. “The General Secretary is profoundly disturbed by the news of yet another terrorist attack in the Russian Federation, this time near the Rizhskaya metro station in Moscow,” RIA Novosti quoted from a statement by Annan’s press secretary. “Annan strongly condemns this criminal act, which led to the death and injury of completely innocent people. The General Secretary would like to express his deepest sympathies to the Russian people and the families of those who died.” The Moscow terrorist attack was also condemned by the US president. “The US strongly condemns the terrorist attacks that took place recently in Russia, the August 24th crash of two passenger planes and the suicide bombing on August 31st near a Moscow metro station,” the White House press secretary expressed in a written statement. “The American people mourn the victims of these terrible attacks and would like to express their sympathies to the families of those who perished.” The document also stated that “no ends can ever justify terrorism. We are approaching the third anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks in the US, and the attacks in Russia remind us of the goals we share with Russia as well as with our friends and allies in the war against this evil and in our efforts to punish terrorists. These terrorist attacks will only strengthen the Russo-American partnership in the war against terror,” the US President’s secretary emphasized. The explosion on Rizhskaya Square killed 10 people, including the female suicide bomber. 51 people were injured, of which 49, including four children, were hospitalized. Sixteen are listed in critical condition.
