28 June 2004 13:45 Russian movie receives top award at Moscow film festival Russian director Dmitry Meskhiyev’s movie Our Own (Svoyi) received the top award — the Golden St. George — at the Moscow International Film Festival that closed on Sunday.
Meskhiyev personally received the prize for best director, and the movie’s lead actor, Bogdan Stupkain, was won the best actor category.
The movie tells the story of Soviet troops who managed to escape from German captivity in 1941 and try to hide in a village. It has already received a prize from Russian film critics. The special jury award — the Silver St. George — was given to the Estonian movie, Pigs’ Revolt (Sigader Revolutsioon), about a youth riot in a collective farm (directors Jaak Kilmi, Rene Reinumagi).
Argentinean China Zorrilla was considered best actress for her performance in the Argentinean film, Conversations with Mama (Conversaciones con Mama) (director Santiago Carlos Oves).
Meryl Streep received the award of the famous Russian theater director, Konstantin Stanislavsky. The prize was given to the actress for “having conquered the peaks of acting skills and adherence to the principles of Stanislavsky’s school.” The grand jury was chaired by the British film director, Alan Parker. Its members were Polish actor and director Jerzy Stuhr, German actress Barbara Sukowa, French producer Humbert Balsan, Russian writer Boris Akunin, and Russian cinematologist and producer Armen Medvedev.
Another Russian film that had taken part in the contest, Papa by Vladimir Mashkov, received the prize of the viewers’ choice.
The annual festival opened on June 18.
