TAIWAN, RUSSIA SIGN WATER RESOURCE TECHNOLOGY COOPERATION MEMORANDUM
MOSCOW, June 22 Asia Pulse - Taiwan and Russia have forged a cooperative memorandum on water resources management and related technological exchanges, the Water Resources Agency (WRA) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs reported Monday. Officials and specialists from Taiwan and Russia gathered in late May for the 1st Taiwan-Russia Water Resources Conference to exchange views on and experiences in hydrology, fresh water resources management and related technologies, WRA officials said. The participants signed a cooperative memorandum upon the conclusion of the conference that Taiwan and Russia will engage in bilateral exchanges in water resources management and related technological fields on a regular basis in the future, the WRA officials said. The two sides also agreed that scholars and specialists in the fields will swap visits to each other's countries to boost bilateral cooperation, beginning with a visit to Taiwan by Russian delegates to attend an international water-related technology exposition slated to open in Taiwan Sept. 3, according to the WRA. In addition to taking part in the water conference, the 12-member Taiwan delegation -- led by WRA Director-General Chen Shen-hsien and made up of WRA officials, academics from universities and representatives from the private industrial sector -- also attended an international hydrology exposition -- ECWATECH-2004, the 6th International Trade Fair and Congress Water: Ecology and Technology -- held in Moscow in early June. According to the WRA officials, although Russia is no longer a "superpower, " the nation's expertise and research in water and ocean resources are renowned worldwide. The Russian "water" researchers have also long been keenly interested in Taiwan's research in the same field, particularly in deep-ocean research and industrial waste water recycling research. (CNA)
