21 June 2004 17:56 Bulgarian Speaker calls for better access to Russian markets Sofia, 21 June: Conferring with Russia's Ambassador in Sofia Anatoly Potapov here on Monday [21 June],
Bulgaria's National Assembly Chairman Ognyan Gerdzhikov raised the need to ease the access of Bulgarian goods to
Russia's markets, the Parliamentary Press Centre said.
"The question is about the import duties and excise duties imposed on Bulgarian goods," Gerdzhikov
specified. He regretted the postponement of the session of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific and
Technological Cooperation at which this matter was to be considered, and said he hoped the session would take place in
the coming months.
Potapov said that a Russian cochairman of the commission is expected to be appointed any time now.
Gerdzhikov asked that Russia ratify the Treaty on Encouragement and Protection of Investments with Bulgaria and the
protocol to that treaty. The National Assembly chairman noted that political dialogue between the two countries is at
its best for the last 15 years. He noted that Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov will pay an official visit to Moscow
in about a fortnight's time and that Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov is expected in Bulgaria early in the
autumn.
As Gerdzhikov put it, bilateral trade has picked up during the past year but still a lot remains to be done to reach
the level of 15 years ago.
