21 June 2004 13:32 Russian, US nuclear regulators discuss cooperation ahead of conference Moscow, 21 June: The Russian and US government services for nuclear supervision and regulation are establishing
cooperation. A meeting has been held in Moscow between the head of the Federal Service for Nuclear Supervision, Andrey
Malyshev, and the chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Nils Diaz, an ITAR-TASS correspondent learnt at the
Russian department today. According to an official departmental representative, "issues of bilateral cooperation
and proposals on developing technical regulations were discussed". The US delegation also familiarized itself with
the work of the information and analysis centre of the Russian Federal Service for Nuclear Supervision.
The Federal Service for Nuclear Supervision stressed that Nils Diaz had arrived in Moscow to prepare for the first
international conference of heads of bodies regulating nuclear energy safety and use of G8 countries opening on 24 June.
The conference will also be attended by representatives of the IAEA, the European Commission and the [OECD's]
Nuclear Energy Agency.
The main task of the Russian Federal Service for Nuclear Supervision, just like that of the regulatory and
supervisory bodies of the other G8 countries, is to ensure the protection and safety of the public and the environment
when nuclear energy or nuclear materials are used for medical or industrial purposes, and to provide for their storage,
as well as providing for the burial of nuclear materials and nuclear waste".
