New tanks to star at Russian arms expo
Moscow, 21 June: About 1,000 Russian defence-sector businesses will take part in the Russian Expo Arms-2004 international trade fair, which will be held in Nizhniy Tagil from 6 to 10 July. "About a thousand defence enterprises have already applied, which is nearly the entire number in the sector," Sverdlovsk Region Governor Eduard Rossel told reporters. In addition to Russian visitors, specialists from 26 countries in the CIS and beyond have also applied to attend, he added. This year's trade fair is special because for the first time it will have federal status, and more companies will be present than ever before, Rossel said. As for the highlight of the show, he went on, that would most likely be the first display of the T-90S tank and the upgraded T-72. Rossel also said that the scene for demonstrating military hardware this year has been significantly reworked in comparison to previous shows: vehicles will move and open fire in conditions made as close as possible to a real combat situation. The trade fair is held biennially, the governor said.
