21 June 2004 10:52 Alleged Russian spy worked for Federal Security Service Moscow, 21 June: Moscow's district military court has set the date of 5 July to consider the criminal case
against Igor Vyalkov, a former employee of a Russian special service. Vyalkov is charged with treason by spying for a
Western country. Valeriy Komissarov, the court's press secretary, told ITAR-TASS today that "this date was set
at today's preliminary hearings, held behind closed doors".
He said the accused did not ask for a trial by jury and his case will be dealt with by one judge. The case will be
tried by judge Yevgeniy Zubov, who earlier dealt with the criminal case against those accused of murdering journalist
Dmitriy Kholodov.
According to the investigation, two years ago, working in one of the units of the Russian Federal Security Service,
the officer handed over a number of secret reports to a foreign special service and was rewarded for this. Vyalkov also
crossed the border illegally several times.
Vyalkov was detained towards the end of 2002 whilst trying to hand over information to an agent of a foreign
intelligence service. [Passage omitted]
