New spy trial opens in Moscow
The Moscow military district court is to begin hearing on Monday [21 June] the case of Igor Vyalkov, a former employee of the [Russian] secret service. Lt-Col Vyalkov is accused of spying and illegal crossing of the state border. According to the prosecution, in 2001 and 2002 Vyalkov gathered secret information, which he sold on to a foreign intelligence service. The prosecution says Vyalkov has given away information relating to the provision of the country's security. Allegedly, the officer illegally crossed the border several times to pass on the information. Vyalkov was detained in the autumn of 2002. He's been kept in custody in the Lefortovo remand centre [in Moscow] ever since.
