21 June 2004 08:02 Russian agricultural minister promotes business links with Australia Sydney, 21 June: Russia and Australia have great potential for developing mutual cooperation, in the opinion of
visiting Russian Agriculture Minister Aleksandr Gordeyev. He is heading a delegation which includes Maksim Kavdzharadze,
deputy chairman of a Federation Council committee and other senior figures of state departments, joint stock companies
and industrial groups.
Gordeyev is the chairman of a joint Russian-Australian intergovermental commission, therefore the agenda of the talks
envisages broader ties not only in agriculture, but also in other sectors of trade and economic relations. "We are
extremely interested in integrating the business activity of the two countries' entrepreneurs and in setting up
joint enterprises," Gordeyev said. "Serious attention will be paid to operating and regulating the food
market, in which Australia has considerable experience. The operation of scientific and production centres within
organized business and supported by the state will be also discussed," Gordeyev said.
He said that in the course of the forthcoming government meetings the delegation intends to explain Russia's
position on joining the WTO and will call on Australia to follow the example of the most Western states and to recognize
Russia as a country with a market economy.
