EU to fund reconstruction of Russian nuclear waste facility
MURMANSK. June 18 (Interfax) - The European Commission is ready to allocate some 4 million euros for the reconstruction of a nuclear waste storage facility at the Radon specialized nuclear security plant. This agreement was reached at a meeting between a European Commission delegation and representatives of the Murmansk regional administration, a source in the local nuclear safety department told Interfax. The project is planned to start in 2006. A tender will be announced soon for carrying out the work and a managing company will be chosen. The project envisages the construction of a container storage facility and the relocation of nuclear waste. The facility will also be refurbished and security structures created, said Vladimir Kozlovsky, a consultant at the nuclear safety department. Earlier, it was presumed that Russia, Norway and Sweden would finance the project on a parity basis. The estimated project cost is approximately 121 million rubles. Sweden later refused to take part in the project, and Russia will only be able to finance its part in 2005. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG ASIA ENV AID DIP] aa tl
