18 June 2004 22:46 Kazakhstan calls for unifying customs rates with Russia, Belarus ASTANA. June 18 (Interfax-Kazakhstan) - Kazakhstan has called on Russia and Belarus to take steps to standardize
customs rates in order to extend the basic list of joint customs rates between the three countries, Kazakh President
Nursultan Nazarbayev told a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Community's Interstate Council in Astana on
Friday.
"Kazakhstan has revised import duties rates with the aim to possibly align them with the Russian-Belarussian
level," he said.
The common customs rates between the three countries are now 56% in line with each other, Nazarbayev said. Kazakhstan
calls on Russia and Belarus to amend the 10% import duties rate, he said. If they do so, 76% of goods will be covered by
common customs rates, he said.
Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan must do more to align their customs duty rates with those of other members of the Eurasian
Economic Community, Nazarbayev said. [KZ ASIA EMRG TRD REG RU BY TJ KG] ap aw
