19 June 2004 11:59 Russia decides to write off Mongolia`s 11bn-dollar debt - agriculture minister Ulaanbaatar, 19 June: Russian-Mongolian trade and economic relations have reached a new stage, and the Russian
government is now ready to invest in the Mongolian economy, the Russian Minister of Agriculture and co-chairman of the
[joint Russian-Mongolian] intergovernmental commission, Aleksey Gordeyev, said here today following his talks with his
Mongolian counterpart [Minister of Infrastructure] Byambyn Jigjid, Prime Minister Nambaryn Enhbayar and President
Natsagiyn Bagabandi.
"We rate highly the economic policy conducted by the current government, especially as the main problem - the
problem of a so called great debt - has been settled," Gordeyev said.
He said Russia viewed relations with Mongolia from a long-term perspective and in fact, thereby, decided to write off
the debt of 11bn dollars.
"Seeing the Mongolian government's reliability, the Russian government is launching such a stage in which
we are ready to invest in the Mongolian economy, to support the inflow of Russian capital here, above all that of
private business, to set up joint ventures and to step up integration processes," the minister said.
