18 June 2004 18:16 Russia: Kabarda-Balkar Republic to have no gas until Gazprom debts paid Approximately 105,000 people in the Kabarda-Balkar Republic will not have their gas supplies restored until R2.3bn
debt is paid to the Russian Gazprom utility, ITAR-TASS reported from the republican capital Nalchik today.
Talk on restoring supplies and restructuring the debt are continuing.
Gas supplies to the republic have been cut since 19 May at first by 30 and subsequently by 50 per cent. Twenty five
populated settlements are without gas and elsewhere pressure is so low that enterprises have been forced to work
overnight, when the pressure is higher, or seek alternative sources of energy, the agency said.
"The population of the republic, hospitals and maternity homes have not had hot water for a month now,"
ITAR-TASS said.
