Kremlin envoy backs the "fairly obvious" candidate for president in Chechnya Rostov-na-Donu, 18 June: The situation in Chechnya ahead of the presidential election is difficult, the Russian
presidential envoy to the Southern Federal District, Vladimir Yakovlev, told reporters today after a meeting with senior
officials from the republic to discuss compensation payments.
A safe environment needs to be created for the election campaign, he said, which includes providing security for the
candidates and ensuring that polling stations can function properly.
As regards his personal view of the candidates, Yakovlev commented that "the campaign has only just begun".
However, he said, current Interior Minister Alu Alkhanov is the best-known candidate and a fairly obvious one. "He
knows what he wants to achieve and how his policies would be put into effect," Yakovlev remarked.
