18 June 2004 16:42 Russia-EU conference calls for joint fight against terrorism St Petersburg, 18 June: Justice ministers of 15 European countries today completed their work at the international
conference called "Russia-EU: prospects of economic and legal integration". It was organized by the Russian
and Finnish justice ministries and supported by the European Commission.
"The process of Russia's integration in the European community has become more outlined. It has become an
objective reality in European and world politics," Russian Justice Minister Yuriy Chayka said.
The second day of the forum was devoted to economic issues. The EU is Russia's main trade partner, with whom
Russia has over 50 per cent of its trade. The EU is the main source of technology and investment. Russia is the
EU's fifth largest partner and the second largest partner for the new EU members.
As regards judicial matters, the participants in the conference emphasized the need to create a "road map"
to move towards a visa-free regime and cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which is aimed at detecting and
stopping financial channels of terrorists, and taking tough measures against various organizations, funds and
individuals linked to this.
