Russian shipyard hands over second tanker to Azeri shipping company
Nizhniy Novgorod: A river and sea tanker, called "President Heydar Aliyev, was today launched at the Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard in Nizhniy Novgorod. The tanker's freight-carrying capacity is 13,000 tonnes and it has been built for Azerbaijan. This is the second tanker that has been built for the Caspian Shipping Line, an ITAR-TASS correspondent learnt at the Krasnoye Sormovo administration. The contract with a company from Azerbaijan was signed in October 2002 and envisaged the construction of four large-tonnage tankers by 2005. The vessels of this design are 152 m long, 10.5 m high and have 12 oil tanks. The new tanker is safer and more solid, because it has double sides and a double floor, which makes it possible to prevent oil leaks in case of an accident. The launch ceremony was attended by the heads of the Caspian Shipping Line and representatives of the Azerbaijani government. They will also attend the beginning of construction of the third tanker, which is to begin at Krasnoye Sormovo today after the second tanker has been handed over.
