Russia`s Yukos fails in legal bid to get back tax case suspended
Moscow, 18 June: The Moscow Court of Arbitration today refused to suspend proceedings in the R99.3bn claim against Yukos instituted by the Ministry of Taxes and Levies, according to Prime-TASS. This upholds a court ruling of 26 May obliging Yukos to pay penalties arising from an audit of the company for 2000. Yukos had asked the court to suspend proceedings in the Ministry of Taxes and Levies action until a ruling in a counter-action brought by Yukos itself to invalidate the Ministry of Taxes and Levies decision of 14 April is adopted and comes into legal force. According to a spokesman for the company, one of the biggest in Russia, before the question of the validity or otherwise of the Ministry of Taxes and Levies decision is determined it is impossible to hear the action to recover taxes, interest and penalties demanded in line with a Ministry of Taxes and Levies decision of 14 April 2004.
